Lionel Messi rounded off his
best ever season with two more goals in the final match against Valladolid,
taking his tally for the season to 34 in the league and 47 in all competitions.
His figures match those of Brazil's Ronaldo when he was at the Nou Camp
thirteen years ago, and he is way ahead of all compettitors this season for the
European "Golden Boot". Not bad for someone who is not an out-and-out striker!
Pedro scored as well for Barcelona though to put in his claim for a place in
Del Bosque's World Cup final squad, and he has been an influential figure in
this season's success.
Before we go any further
though we have to congratulate Atlético Madrid on their Europa League
cup final win against Fulham. Diego Forlán's two goals confirmed him as
a player who comes up with the goods when it most matters. Watch out for him in
the World Cup!
Back to La Liga, and goals
from Kanouté and Negredo put Sevilla on the way to a Champions League
spot, although it took a last minute winner from Rodri to give them the three
points they needed (his first ever for the first team). With Luis Fabiano
nursing an injury and Negredo suspended for the Copa del Rey final against
Atlético, the youngster may well be called upon again. Soldado has made
a timely return to the Getafe line up after a long injury lay-off, and his two
goals against Atlético took his side up to the Europa League spots.
Villarreal miss out, even though two from Cazorla and another from Rossi saved
them a point at Zaragoza. And elsewhere Tchité scored another brace for
Racing to keep them in the top flight for another season. An exciting end to
the league, and all eyes on now on Wednesday's cup final. (17.05.10)
Goals from Diego Capel and
Jesús Navas won the cup for Sevilla on Wednesday night against
Atlético Madrid, so no late changes to our table. (19.05.10)
