No real surprises in Europe
midweek, with Barcelona going through to the Champions League final after
drawing 1-1 on Tuesday night in the Nou Camp against arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Coming on top of Messi's two from the first leg, Pedro's goal put the result
beyond Madrid's reach before Marcelo equalised. And on Thursday Villarreal were
unable to overturn a 5-1 result against Porto, albeit that they did clock up a
brave 3-2 win on the night thanks to Rossi's late penalty.
So to the league, and
Cristiano Ronaldo took a big step towards tying up this season's La Liga
Pichichi title with four goals in a 2-6 drubbing of Sevilla. Marca, the Madrid
based sports paper who give the award, have added one to his tally for a goal
earlier in the season which the referee awarded to Pepe (Ronaldo's shot hit him
on the back and went in!), and with Messi not scoring this weekend it looks
like Ronaldo has the edge. Still three games to go though, so who
knows?
Both Sevilla's goals were
scored by Negredo, who is one of several Spanish strikers vying for a place in
Del Bosque's squad for the end of season matches against USA and Venezuela. The
coach is spoiled for choice though as Soldado also scored two more for Valencia
against Real Sociedad, Llorente got one of Athletic's three against Levante,
and under 21 striker Adrián scored both of Deportivo's goals at Sporting
(although the Galicians were denied the three points by two controversial
penalties and are now in the relegation zone). One man they may come up against
in Venezuela is Rondón, who together with Baptista is helping
Málaga escape the drop. They both scored again this weekend in a
surprise 0-3 victory at Atlético. (10.05.11) |
