An incredible post-script to
the season, with Barcelona beating Manchester United 3-1 in the Champions
League final to tie up their fourth trophy in the competition. The goals came
from their front "MVP" trio, Messi, Villa and Pedro (not necesarily in that
order), taking their combined tally to 103 for the season in all club
competitions! Messi's goal takes him level with Cristiano Ronaldo in our chart
as well, although Ronaldo takes our award this year as goals in La Liga take
priority over the rest. Still, between the two of them they have scored an
unbelievable 106, a once in a lifetime achievement (until next season?!?)? We
can't wait for it all to start again! (28.05.11)
Cristiano Ronaldo settled
any debate about whether he had set a new league record when he scored two in
Real Madrid's 8-1 thrashing of already relegated Almería (Ronaldo 2,
Abebayor 3, Benzema 2 and B team striker Joselu 1). The only question remaining
is whether he scored 40 or 41, with the Madrid based Spanish newspaper Marca
(the official prize-giver) awarding him one more than in the official referees
reports (see last week's Pichichi report for details). Ronaldo's brace actually
takes him above Messi in our table, but the Barcelona forward still (who was
rested at the weekend) has a chance to come back in next Saturday's Champions
League final.
The top two have been in a
league of their own this season, but below them there were some sterling
performances from players such as Rossi, whose 32 goals may have taken the
prize in other seasons. Agüero finished fourth in our chart after scoring
a brilliant hat-trick at Mallorca (with Webó getting two for the
locals), although it didn't help his side improve their seventh position as
Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao both won. Negredo scored twice for the Andalusians
and Kanouté got what may be his last goal for the club in a 2-3 victory
at Espanyol, with Osvaldo (who may also be on his way, maybe even to Sevilla)
replying for the Catalans. And Llorente was on target again in a 1-2 win at
Racing which kept the Basques in sixth spot.
Drama down in the lower
reaches, where five clubs were fighting to avoid the last relegation spot.
Goals from Valencia's Aduríz and Soldado though sent Deportivo down
after a 20 year run in the top flight, with two from captain Gabi saving
Zaragoza despite a late fright from Levante's Stuani. A great season all round
though, and the icing on the cake (we hope) will be next Saturday, when
Barcelona take on Manchester United in that Wembley final (23.05.11)
