Wins for five out six La Liga sides in Europe midweek, with Messi scoring yet another hat-trick and Fàbregas also getting in on the act as Barça beat Viktoria Plsen 0-4, and Ronaldo getting both goals as Real Madrid won 0-2 at Olympique Marseille. Both are already through to the knock-out stage, and Messi and Ronaldo are past their 200 and 100 goal targets we talked about last week. Valencia also clocked up an important 3-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen to stay in with a chance of reaching the last 16, with Jonas scoring the second fastest goal in the history of the Champions League and Soldado and Rami also on the scoresheet, and only Villarreal were beaten, a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Manchester City dumping them out of the competition. On Thursday the two Europa League teams also recorded good wins, Ander scoring the only goal for Athletic at Salzburg to book their place in the next round, and Atlético getting their campaign back on track with a 4-0 tonking of Udinese, new boys Adrián (twice), Diego and Falcao the scorers.

On to the weekend, with Real Madrid extending their lead at the top to three points thanks to a massive 7-1 win over Osasuna on Sunday lunchtime. There was a hat-trick from Ronaldo to match Messi's midweek, Higuaín got his eleventh of the season and Benzema came on to score two after the break. Later in the evening Barça struggled to draw 2-2 at Athletic, and only an injury time goal from Messi saved a point. Fàbregas had cancelled out Ander's earlier goal, but a rebound off Llorente which Piqué then turned in to his own net (the referee awarded the goal to the striker) restored the lead for the Basque side. Elsewhere Michu scored twice as Rayo racked up four against Real Sociedad, Barral got two for Sporting and Postiga a late equaliser for Zaragoza in a 2-2 draw, and a Falcao penalty was not enough to prevent Atlético from losing 3-2 to neighbours Getafe, even though they were facing ten men for over three-quarters of the match.
