Atlético Madrid and Athletic Bilbao are both sure of a place in the knock-out stage of the Europa League after they won their respective midweek matches, the former beating Celtic 0-1 with a first goal from Arda Turan, and the latter winning 2-1 against Slovan Bratislava thanks to strikes from De Marcos and Susaeta, two of their most on-form players.

All eyes though are already on "El Clásico" between Real Madrid and Barcelona in a week's time, and both clocked up big wins this week. Barça in fact played twice, kicking off on Tuesday night with a match against Rayo Vallecano brought forward from day 17 to make space for them to play in the Club World Cup later this month, Alexis netting twice and Villa and Messi adding two more in a 4-0 victory. And on Saturday they went one better, beating fourth placed Levante 5-0 with goals from Fàbregas (2), Cuenca, Messi and Alexis to make it a head-spinning aggregate scoreline of 39-0 in the Nou Camp this season in the league. Real Madrid though are also on top form, and they beat Sporting Gijón 0-3 with strikes from Di María, Ronaldo and Marcelo for a fourteenth victory on the trot. It's anyone's guess who is going to come out on top next weekend, but whatever you do don't miss it!

Elsewhere though life goes on for the mere mortals, and Valencia are in fact only four points behind Barça with a game in hand after a 2-1 win over Espanyol, Soldado (who Emery had rested for the upcoming Chelsea game) having to come on to sort things out once again after the Catalans had levelled the scores. When will Del Bosque bring him back in to the Spain squad? Falcao returned to the Atlético side after a brief injury lay-off to score one of his side's three against neighbours Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, and on Monday night Manu Del Moral helped Sevilla up to fifth spot with the second of his team's three against Getafe. Right now however what happens on planet Earth is secondary to the "Combat of the Gods"! (06.12.11)
