We all knew that Messi would make it to 50 goals again this season, but not even the most fervent of his fans could have imagined last Monday that he would be there by this weekend. But on Wednesday he outshone even himself with five in a 7-1 Champions League drubbing of Bayer Leverkusen, the first player to do so in the current form of the competition. And this weekend he scored both goals (including a penalty) in Barça's 0-2 win at Racing Santander, making it a massive seven for the week. "Only" 30 of his goals have come in the league though, and Cristiano Ronaldo stays two ahead of him after scoring a brace in Real Madrid's 2-3 victory at Betis. It's Ronaldo's turn in the Champions League next Wednesday - can he match the little man?

It was in fact an incredible week for Spanish sides in Europe, and as well as Messi's five, Tello came on to score two for Barcelona on his debut in the tournament - another of the many young talents who are coming through at the Nou Camp. Barça's performance was eclipsed though on Thursday by Athletic Bilbao, who ran rings round the mighty Manchester United in Old Trafford before running out 2-3 victors. Llorente, De Marcos and Muniain added a few millions to their price tags with the goals. Valencia seemed to be cruising to a big win over PSV Eindhoven when they scored four with under an hour on the clock, Soldado getting two of those, but two late goals by the Dutch side left the Ches with some work to do next week. And Atlético Madrid also let things slide after going three up at the break against Besiktas, with Salvio scoring twice and Ardián an impressive third, a strike by old boy Simao pegging them back to 3-1 in the end.

Other than Real Madrid (for whom Higuaín was also on the scoresheet), the big scorers at the weekend were Espanyol with five (new signings Kalu Uche (3) and Countinho (2) getting the goals) and Real Sociedad with three (including two for Agirretxe). Atlético kept up their good form with a 2-0 win over Granada on Sunday lunchtime, with Falcao netting the second, but Athletic were brought down to Earth with a 2-1 defeat at neighbours Osasuna. Llorente did at least get the one, however. (13.03.12)
