A great week for Spanish sides in Europe, with all four teams qualifying for their respective quarter finals. Real Madrid join Barcelona in the last eight of the Champions League after a comfortable 4-1 victory over CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring two and Higuaín and Benzema also on the scoresheet. The following day Athletic Bilbao beat Manchester United for the second time in eight days in the Europa League, Llorente shrugging off an injury long enough to open the scoring, and De Marcos adding a second in a 2-1 victory. And elsewhere Atlético Madrid won 0-3 at Besiktas, with Adrián, Falcao and Salvio the scorers, and Valencia beat PSV Eindhoven 4-2 on aggregate, Rami getting the goal in a 1-1 draw in the second leg. With the quarter final draw keeping the Liga teams apart, all five could make it through to their respective semi-finals.

Only 24 goals at the weekend, but our Pichichis got nine of those, including a hat-trick for Valencia's Soldado at Athletic Bilbao, his first goals in eight league games. Messi and Xavi were the scorers for Barcelona in a 0-2 win at Sevilla, Messi's in particular taking him to within one of Cristiano Ronaldo in the league and also to within one of an all time club record. He was unhappy with the referee though who incorrectly ruled out a second strike for offside which would otherwise have taken him level with both. Ronaldo didn't score at the weekend, but Benzema did, although his goal was cancelled out by a last minute free kick from Málaga's Cazorla which enabled Barça to peg back two points on their eternal rivals. Tamudo rounded off Rayo's win at Betis with his side's third goal, but strikes by Atlético's Falcao and Racing's Stuani were not enough to prevent defeats for their respective sides. (20.03.12)
