Another round of midweek games, and the battle between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo continues. Both are already in to unchartered territory, smashing records like plates in a Greek restaurant after a particular rowdy wedding between a bull in a china shop and Genghis Khan's chief, er, plate-smasher (we think you get the picture...). Messi threw down the gauntlet again on Tuesday with another goal in Barcelona's 4-0 win over Getafe (Alexis 2 and Pedro the other scorers), his 61st goal of the season in all club competitions. According to reports we saw, that only leaves him two short of Dixie Dean's record 63 for Everton in the 1927/8 season, Pelé's 67 in Brazil in 1958, and possibly Müller's 67 for Bayern Munich in 1972/3 (although apparently 12 of those were in the unofficial German League Cup).

The following day though Ronaldo helped himself to his seventh hat-trick of the season in Real Madrid's 1-4 victory at Atlético (for the record, Falcao and Callejón also scored), equalling his all time league record set last season of 40 goals. It was also an all time record in the league of 20 away goals, and together with Higuaín's two, it also set a new record for one team of nine hat-tricks. Overall Madrid have now scored 104 in the current campaign, and they are well on track to smash John Toshack's best of 107, set when he was manager at the Bernabeu in the 1989/90 season. With six games still to go, plus Champions League semi-finals for both, who knows how things will end up?

Back on planet Earth though life continues, and the 36 goals scored midweek equalled the second highest tally of the season. Valencia regained third spot with a 4-1 win over Rayo, Jonas stepping in for Soldado and Aduríz with two of the goals, but Levante drop down to fifth after losing 3-2 at Sporting, Koné's fifteenth of the season not enough to prevent the defeat. Sevilla close in on the European spots with a 3-0 win over Zaragoza, Negredo putting in his claim for a place in Spain's Euro squad with a brace, and Athletic Bilbao are up there as well after coming from two down to draw 2-2 at Granada, Llorente and Susaeta the late scorers. Elsewhere Real Sociedad and Betis continued to distance themselves from the drop zone, with Carlos Vela and Rubén Castro getting the goals in a 1-1 draw between the two sides. More at the weekend!
