Five games still to go in the league, and Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are still neck and neck in the race for the Pichichi. Those necks are longer than a giraffe's though as both broke the all-time record on the same day, with Ronaldo getting one against Sporting and Messi two at Levante (including another penalty) to take their tallies to an incredible 41 for the season, one more than Ronaldo's best which he set only last year. However whereas Ronaldo has help from side-kicks Benzema and Higuaín, both of whom scored in the 3-1 win over the Asturians, Messi seems to be doing it all alone right now. Nobody else in the team has more than 10 goals in the league to date! Everything will come to a head next week though in the Nou Camp, with Madrid only needing one goal now to break another record, the 107 goals scored by John Toshack's side in the 1989/90 season.

Elsewhere Llorente and Falcao were both on target to give their sides 1-0 wins, and Rubén Castro got his fourth in as many games to save Betis for another season. It was a fairly low-scoring weekend though until Monday night, when Getafe thrashed Sevilla 5-1 to make it a five-way tie for seventh spot. Negredo actually put the Andalusians ahead with a spectacular strike, but Miku helped himself to a couple to spoil Michel's return to his old hunting ground. (17.04.12)
