Not a great week for Spanish sides in Europe, with four of the five semi-finalists losing. Neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona had been beaten in the Champions League this season, but both lost their first legs, Barça falling to a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea, and Madrid losing 2-1 at Bayern Munich. Özil's away goal does at least give Mourinho's side an even chance for next week's return in the Bernabeu however. On Thursday Atlético Madrid beat Valencia 4-2 in the all Spanish Europa League semi-final, with Falcao scoring two and Miranda and Adrián getting the others for the hosts, and Jonas and Ricardo Costa replying for the Ches. Athletic Bilbao were beating 2-1 though by Sporting Gijón, Aurtenetxe's opener being cancelled out later on by the Portuguese team, inspired by Spain's own Diego Capel.

All eyes this Saturday were on the Nou Camp, where Real Madrid finally overcame their arch rivals to virtually sew up the title race. Alexis cancelled out Khedira's opener, but Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner to also move one goal ahead of Messi in the race for the Liga Pichichi title. Later in the evening Levante kept up their fight for the European spots, Koné saving a point for the Valencia based club against his old side Sevilla after Negredo had opened the scoring. Valencia themselves are back on track for third spot, Jonas and Soldado amongst the scorers in a 4-0 win over Betis, and Real Sociedad took another step towards safety with a 1-1 draw against Villarreal, Carlos Vela getting the equaliser for the Basque side later on in the match.
