Some interesting matches midweek, not least of which the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup between Spain's two giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barça ran out 3-2 winners, with Pedro, Messi a (penalty) and Xavi scoring for the locals, but strikes by Cristiano Ronaldo and Di María setting up a fascinating second leg. The European play-offs have also started, with Málaga getting a head's start on Panathinaikos with a 2-0 victory, Demichelis and Eliseu getting the goals. Good results as well in the Europa League, with Aduríz and Susaeta scoring two each in a 6-0 thrashing of HJK Helsinki, and Levante beating Motherwell 0-2 in their first ever game in a European competition. Juanlu wrote his name in the history books with the first, and El Zhar added the second.

A high scoring weekend in the league as well, with Messi already topping our chart after scoring both goals in Barça's 1-2 win at Osasuna. Falcao also opened his account with a hat-trick against a tired Athletic Bilbao, and Soldado and Abel Aguilar scored two each as Valencia and Deportivo played out a high scoring 3-3 draw. A surprise defeat again though for Real Madrid in one of their worst starts in living memory, Higuaín's strike not enough to prevent them from going down 2-1, and Jorge Molina's third of the season was also academic as Betis lost 1-2 to Rayo. Hemed is level with Molina on three goals after scoring for Mallorca in their late night match at Málaga, curiously the second goal he has scored after midnight this season! Elsewhere Víctor Pérez converted two penalties against Levante to take Valladolid joint top of the table, Agirretxe also scored a brace as Real Sociedad came from behind to beat Celta, and Negredo netted for Sevilla in a 1-1 draw at neighbours Granada. Thirty-one goals in all this weekend, and we are off to a flying start. (28.08.12)
