Messi is banging them in two by two at the moment, and he took his tally for the season to ten after a brace in the Champions League 3-2 win against Spartak Moscow, a record even for him in the first seven games of the season. Barça left it late though, and Real Madrid left it even later, Benzema and Ronaldo scoring twice in the last five minutes as Mourinho's side came from behind to beat Manchester City by the same scoreline. Málaga had a more comfortable 3-0 win over Zenit in their first ever game at the league stage, Isco scoring twice and Saviola one in between, and only Valencia lost on the opening day, a late header by Nelson Valdez not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat at Bayern Munich. Europa League on Thursday, with a half-strength Atlético enough to beat Hapoel Tel-Aviv 0-3, goals from Cebolla, Diego Costa and Raul García. "The Hairdresser" Juanfran (remember him from his Valencia days?), a local born boy to boot, got Levante's first ever goal in the Europa League proper against Helsingborg (out, out, damn spot, I'll never get this hair clean...), but it took a strike from Susaeta to save a 1-1 draw for Athletic Bilbao against the little known Hapoel Kiryat.

So to the weekend, and a late strike from Xavi and an own goal against Granada saved Barcelona's 100% record in the league. Benzema and Ronaldo were on target again, this time at neighbours Rayo, to maintain the gap with the leaders to eight points, and Falcao netted a penalty in a 2-1 win over Valladolid to keep Atlético up with the top sides, the Colombian striker's eighth of the season in all competitions. Negredo and Barrada scored their third of the season for Sevilla and Getafe respectively, and Víctor (Mallorca) and Apoño and Postiga (both Zaragoza) were on the scoresheets in their respective games.
