Cristiano Ronaldo saved the day for Real Madrid in the cup, his hat-trick against Celta helping his team overcome a first leg deficit. Messi meanwhile spent the whole 90 minutes on the subs bench against Córdoba, but David Villa did help himself to a brace which makes him La Copa's leading scorer this season. All four of La Liga's Champions League sides meet each other in the top half of the quarter finals, with Madrid due to face Valencia after they won through against Osasuna. Soldado was the man who finally laid to rest his old side, and he now has a chance to repeat the act against the club where he grew up. Betis's Rubén Castro also got the winning goal against his old team Las Palmas, and the Andalusians now meet Atlético Madrid in the next round.

La Liga reached the mid-point of the season at the weekend, with Barcelona setting a best ever record of 18 wins and a draw in the first 19 games after beating Málaga 1-3. Messi started things off, scoring for the ninth league game in a row, just one short of the record set by the old Ronaldo (the fat one!), and Fàbregas and Thiago completed the scoring for Vilanova's side later on. With Real Madrid being held to a 0-0 draw at Osasuna, Atlético Madrid are the only ones anywhere in touch with the leaders, and Falcao converted a penalty in a 2-0 win over Zaragoza which kept up their 100% home record this season. Elsewhere the race for the "Zarra" prize (top-scoring local player in the league) is hotting up, Valencia's Soldado netting twice against Sevilla and Rubén Castro getting one of the Betis goals against Levante (Molina scoring the other). Both join Aduríz on eleven, and Piti now has nine after converting a penalty against Aduríz's Athletic Bilbao in the San Mamés stadium. Valladolid's Oscar is not far off either after scoring his eighth of the season against Mallorca, and Real Sociedad's Mexican forward Carlos Vela also has eight after getting his side's equaliser against Deportivo. Pizzi had given the Galicians the lead earlier on. (15.01.13)
