The cruellest of defeats for Málaga in Tuesday night's Champions League tie at Borussia Dortmund, Joaquín and Eliseu twice putting the Andalusians ahead, but the German side scoring two in injury time to win the game 3-2. Real Madrid were also beaten 3-2 by Galatasaray, but with a three goal cushion from the first leg they still made it through to the semi-finals. Cristiano Ronaldo was once again the hero, scoring the first and last goals of the evening to take his tally to eleven for the competition this season. Messi was not fit to start Barcelona's game against Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday, but Tito Vilanova kept him on the bench just in case. A good thing too as it proved, as he limped on for the last half hour to inspire his side and start the move which ended with Pedro scoring the goal which took the Catalans through to the last four as well.

Messi will probably not feature again until the semi-final against Bayern Munich, but Ronaldo was in action once more at the weekend to score another brace and set up Higuaín for a third at Athletic Bilbao. That takes his total in all club competitions this season to 50, which would probably be a record if Messi had not scored seven more to date! Both are rewriting the history books though, and there will be more to come. Falcao meanwhile scored two for Atlético at Granada after Diego Costa had started things off take his own career total to two hundred. Twenty four of those have come in the league this season, and again we would be talking of new records if it were not for the two footballing gods!

There were goals as well though for mere mortals this weekend, with Rakitic celebrating his recent wedding with two and Negredo adding a third for Sevilla before city rivals Betis came back to draw 3-3 in Friday night's big derby game. Rubén Castro got one of those for the locals from the penalty spot. Oscar scored a vital goal for Valladolid to help them come from behind to beat Getafe on Saturday, and Jonas and Soldado were on target for Valencia as they drew 3-3 at Espanyol. The Ches are still four points behind fourth placed Real Sociedad though after the Basque side beat Rayo Vallecano 0-2 on Sunday lunchtime, Agirretxe getting both goals early on. (16.04.13)
