With no mid-week matches this week, it was a chance at last for players to get a well-earned rest prior to the frantic run-in to the end of the season. Barcelona and Real Madrid extended the break for some of their key men over the weekend in preparation for their Champions League semi-finals, but both still won to all but mathematically ensure their places for the top European competition next season. Tito Vilanova's side had more problems than expected though before beating Levante 1-0, Fàbregas stepping in for the injured Messi to get the only goal late on.

Real Madrid themselves cruised to a fairly comfortable 3-1 win over Betis, and although Ronaldo played the ninety minutes without scoring, he did help set up goals for Benzema and Özil. Jorge Molina got the goal for the visitors from the penalty spot. Atlético Madrid stay just three points behind their city neighbours though after a 0-1 victory at Sevilla, Falcao on target to take his tally in the league to 25 this season. Atlético have a chance to catch Real next weekend when the two teams meet in the Calderón stadium, although they would have to break a 24 game run without a win to do so.

The "Zarra" prize for the top scoring Spanish player is still up for grabs, although Soldado got one up on his closest rival Negredo after scoring a brace in Valencia's 5-1 win over Málaga. The Ches are closing in on the last Champions League spot, and they have a chance to move up to fourth in the table if they can beat current incumbents Real Sociedad this weekend. Neither Negredo nor third placed Rubén Castro scored this weekend, but Rayo's Piti did get the goal for his team in a 1-1 draw at Mallorca to move up to fourth in the "Zarra" rankings. (23.04.13)
