So that's it then, Spain are left without a Champions League finalist after Real Madrid and Barcelona fell at the semi-final stage for the second season in a row. Madrid at least put up a bit of a fight, late strikes by Benzema and Ramos leaving them just a goal short of overturning the first leg defeat at Borussia Dortmund, but a Messi-less Barcelona lost 0-3 the following day at home to Bayern Munich to make it a humiliating 0-7 scoreline on aggregate.

Barça did bounce back at the weekend though, a 4-2 victory against Betis on Sunday night leaving them just two points away from another league title. However they needed a not-fully-fit Messi to give them a hand once again after Alexis and Villa had cancelled out earlier strikes by their opponents, the Argentinian superstar scoring twice in the forty minutes or so that he was on the park to make it 60 for the season in all competitions.

Cristiano Ronaldo was not to be outdone by his arch-rival though, and he too scored with a couple of headers as Real Madrid overcame Oscar's early strike to win 4-3 against Valladolid. The result prevented the leaders from tying up the championship this weekend, and took Mourinho's side eight points clear of third placed Atlético, who were held to a 0-0 draw at Deportivo.

The point did ensure Atleti's place in the Champions League for next season however, and they just need a couple more to tie up that third spot after Real Sociedad lost 2-1 at Getafe on Monday night, Vela's early strike not enough to prevent defeat. Valencia closed back to within two points of the Basque side, Soldado and Jonas on target in a 4-0 win over Osasuna, and Sevilla are within sight of the European places after a 3-0 victory over Espanyol, Negredo amongst the scorers there.

With all five teams below them recording positive results, Osasuna's defeat drags them down in to the relegation battle. There were wins for Granada and Zaragoza, and draws for Deportivo, Celta and Mallorca, Iago Aspas and Hemed getting the goals for the latter two to save them both a point. (07.05.13)
