Up to this week Cristiano Ronaldo has had a relatively quiet start to the season (for him at least), but days after signing a new contract which makes him the highest paid footballer in the world, he has exploded back on to the scene with five goals in as many days. On Tuesday he notched up the 21st hat-trick of his career in the Champions League opener at Galatasaray, Benzema also scoring two and Isco another in a 1-6 victory. And on Sunday he netted two more in a 4-1 win over neighbours Getafe, his 209th for the club in only 205 appearances, taking him past Madrid's erstwhile 5th highest goalscorer, Hugo Sánchez.

Arch-rival Messi was not to be outdone however, and on Wednesday he too clocked up a hat-trick (in his case the 24th) in a 4-0 victory over Ajax (anything you can do...). Atlético Madrid also won their Champions League game against Zenit 3-0, with goals by Miranda, Turan and Baptistao, but Real Sociedad paid the price of their inexperience in the competition, losing 0-2 to Shakhtar Donetsk. On Thursday Valencia and Betis both failed to score in their Europa League matches, although Sevilla did eke out a 1-2 victory at Estoril, Vitolo and Gameiro the scorers.

European competitions will be shelved for a couple of weeks though, and there are now eleven straight days of league games, week 5 taking place from Friday to Monday, and week 6 starting tonight. Barcelona and Atlético Madrid kept up their 100% records with victories on Saturday evening, Pedro getting his first hat-trick for his club in a 0-4 win at Rayo Vallecano, and Raúl García and Diego Costa the scorers as Atlético beat Valladolid 0-2. Real Madrid are just two points behind them though after a 4-1 victory over Getafe, Isco on the scoresheet again as well as the aforementioned brace from Ronaldo.

Elsewhere Gameiro's fifth of the season was not enough to prevent Sevilla's 3-1 defeat at Valencia, a result which left the Andalusians at the bottom of the table, and on Monday night Víctor Sánchez scored two for Espanyol in a 3-2 win against Athletic which saw the Barcelona based side up to fifth in the rankings.
