A couple of surprises in the cup midweek, with Racing Santander knocking out Sevilla and Alcorcón beating Granada, although the four Champions League sides made it through comfortably against their second division B opponents. In particular Pedro and Neymar were on target as Barcelona beat Cartagena 3-0, and Griezmann and Vela were amongst the scorers as Real Sociedad won 4-0 against Algeciras. Only one other goal from our leading Pichichis though, Javi Guerra's early strike for Valladolid not enough to prevent a 3-1 defeat at Rayo Vallecano, the forward himself getting sent off at the beginning of the second half.

A high scoring round of games at the weekend to send us off to the short festive break, with leaders Barcelona netting five at Getafe on Sunday despite missing the injured Messi and the suspended Neymar. In their absence though Pedro helped himself to a quick-fire hat-trick and Fàbregas added two more, including a second half penalty, to extend their record run at the top of the table to 55 weeks. Atlético Madrid are still level with Barça on points though after a 3-2 win over Levante, Diego Costa scoring twice in the second half to take his tally in the league to 19 in only 17 games. That is even one more than Ronaldo, who got one of Real Madrid's goals in a 2-3 victory at Valencia which keeps Ancelotti's team in sight of the leaders.

Although the top three are already out of sight, fourth place is still up for grabs, Real Sociedad staying four points behind Athletic Bilbao after a 1-3 win at Granada, with Carlos Vela getting two and Griezmann one in between. Sevilla close to within two points of sixth placed Villarreal after they beat Marcelino's side 1-2, Bacca scoring the goal which made the difference, and Espanyol kept their hopes of European football alive with a 4-2 win over Valladolid, Sergio García getting the opener from the penalty spot to enter our chart for the first time this season. Javi Guerra and Víctor Pérez did get two back late on, but the goals didn't change a result which left their side just outside of the bottom three going in to the new year. (23.12.13)
