The four semi-finalists of the Copa del Rey this year will be the four teams which represented La Liga in the Champions League, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Real Sociedad. Jesé’s goal on Tuesday was enough to seal Real Madrid’s pass through against Espanyol, and they will face city rivals and defending champions Atlético Madrid after Simeone’s side became the first team to win in Athletic Bilbao’s new San Mamés stadium. Aduríz did level the tie momentarily, but second half goals by Raúl García and Diego Costa (his first of 2014) set up a repeat of last year’s final. Barcelona had no problems finishing off Levante, Alexis scoring two of the easiest goals he is likely to score ever and Fàbregas also amongst the scorers in a 5-1 victory in the Nou Camp, and they will meet Real Sociedad, who went through by default after the players of the bankrupt Racing Santander finally said enough after several months without pay, and refused to take part in their second leg tie.

A change of leaders at the weekend, Barça knocked off top spot by Atlético Madrid after 59 consecutive weeks heading the table. Tata Martino’s side were beaten 2-3 by Valencia despite a strike by Alexis and a Messi penalty, and Atlético’s 4-0 win against Real Sociedad the following day took them three points clear of their rivals in the rankings. Real Madrid also had a chance to move up to second later on, but although Jesé continued to attract the attentions of Spain coach Del Bosque with the opener, a thunderbolt by Ibai Gómez (Don Vicente, take note) saved a draw for the Basque team. They stay fourth, now just three points ahead of Villarreal, who beat Osasuna 3-1 on Monday evening, Perbet coming on for the injured Uche to score twice in the second half, and Oriol Riera getting an impressive consolation goal for the visitors late on. Elsewhere Bacca added to his tally with one of Sevilla’s goals at Málaga, albeit that it didn’t prevent a defeat, and El-Arabi got his eighth of the season for Granada, again pointless (in every sense of the word) after the Andalusians lost 1-2 to Celta on Friday night.
