Real Madrid and Barcelona will meet for the seventh time in a Copa del Rey final after both won through their respective midweek semi-finals. Two early Ronaldo penalties saw Madrid through against city rivals on Tuesday evening, and a first half Messi strike sank Real Sociedad on Wednesday, even though the Basque side did save a draw thanks to a late goal by Griezmann. With honours shared at three wins each, the April final will tip the balance one way or another.

The four big teams from Madrid and Barcelona together with Celta were the only ones to score more than one goal this weekend, Atlético Madrid kicking off with a 3-0 win over Valladolid on Saturday afternoon, Raúl García and Diego Costa amongst the scorers. Barcelona responded hitting Rayo for six, with two from Messi, one each from Adriano, Alexis and Pedro, and Neymar completing the "set" on his comeback from injury with a real cracker. On Sunday Real Madrid won 0-3 at local rivals Getafe to keep up the three way tie at the top, Jesé, Benzema and Modric getting the goals (Ronaldo was still suspended), and later in the evening Espanyol became the first team to beat Athletic Bilbao in the league at their new stadium, team captain Sergio García starting things off for the Catalans. However the other fifteen sides only managed four goals between them! (18.02.14)
