No European matches this week, but there was one league game postponed from a couple of weeks ago, Valladolid and Real Madrid playing out a 1-1 draw which didn’t help either side in their respective objectives. It was Madrid’s second draw in a row, and on Sunday they took themselves completely out of the running for the league title after a 2-0 defeat at Celta, Charles getting both goals for the Luis Enrique’s side to take them up to respectable eighth place. That left Atlético Madrid and Barcelona in the mix, but surprisingly both drew their games, the former 1-1 at home to Málaga, and the latter 0-0 at Elche. Atlético in particular are ruing a golden opportunity to wrap things up this weekend, but they now have to pick themselves up and try to get at least a draw out of the final match of the season in the Nou Camp on Saturday.

Valladolid meanwhile went in to their penultimate game at the already relegated Betis desperately needing points, but although they took the lead no less than three times (Javi Guerra netting two of those), in the end they lost 4-3, with Jorge Molina and Rubén Castro amongst the scorers for the locals. That left them down in the bottom three alongside Osasuna, but they still have a chance of escape if they can beat fellow strugglers Granada next Sunday. With Osasuna themselves hosting Betis, and Almería and Getafe also not safe, it looks like being a cliff-hanger of a last weekend!

The three Europa League places were decided a couple of weeks ago, but not the order, which is important as fifth place in the league gives the incumbent automatic passage to the group stage of the competition, whereas the team finishing sixth has to play a qualifier, and the one ending seventh will have to play the earlier rounds at the beginning of August. Real Sociedad are currently in the middle, and although they could catch Sevilla, they could also be overtaken themselves by Villarreal, who visit Anoeta next weekend after a morale-boosting 4-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, Uche getting the opener for Marcelino’s side.
