With the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid still pending, Cristiano Ronaldo is this season’s winner of the Pichichi award, taking the title for the second time after scoring 50 goals in all club competitions. Ronaldo also takes the European Golden Boot with 31 in the league, although an injury prevented him from getting the extra goal he needed in the last game of the season, and he has to share the trophy with Liverpool’s Luis Suárez. The Portuguese superstar pushed four times winner Messi in to second place, with Diego Costa taking the “Zarra” trophy for the highest scoring Spanish player (well, he is sort of we suppose!). Messi and Costa came face to face in the title decider in the Nou Camp (the first time in over 60 years that the top two met on the last day), with Costa coming out on top, albeit that he didn’t last a quarter of the game before he limped off. The game ended 1-1, good enough for Atlético to win the league for the first time in 18 years, with Alexis giving the locals the lead in the first half, and Godín equalizing after the break. Barça still finish second though, just ahead of Real Madrid, who won their last match against Espanyol 3-1. In Ronaldo’s absence Bale opened the scoring, with youngster Morata coming on to add two late on. He should be featuring in our charts soon, if he isn’t enticed away by foreign sirens this summer!

Other issues at stake on the last day too, with five teams trying to avoid the two relegation spots. Osasuna go down with Valladolid though despite a 2-1 win by the Pamplona based side against the already relegated Betis, Oriol Riera’s first goal provoking a human avalanche which caused a thirty minute delay as a barrier collapsed, and several fans were injured (the other three games were stopped at the break to allow them to catch up). The incumbents of the European spots had already been decided before the last day, but Villarreal snatched sixth place from Real Sociedad with a 1-2 victory at Anoeta, which means they get longer holidays as the seventh placed team has to play the earlier rounds of the Europa League at the beginning of August. Giovani and Uche got the goals for Marcelino’s side, with Carlos Vela scoring an injury time consolation for the locals. Neither could catch fifth placed Sevilla though, who were in any case sure of a place in the league stage of the competition after their epic victory in Wednesday’s final. As most of you will know, the game ended 0-0, but the Andalusians scored all four of their penalties to beat Benfica in the shoot out. Another “all-Spanish” European Supercup coming up again! Let’s hope Spain do as well in this summer’s World Cup! (20.05.14)

PS An amazing Champions League final, with Marcelo, Bale and Ronaldo (penalty) scoring in extra time as Real Madrid beat Atlético Madrid 4-1 to take their tenth title. Godín had given Atleti the lead, but a last gasp goal by Sergio Ramos took the match into the extra time period. Ronaldo's 17th in the competition this season smashed Messi's previous record.
