The long summer break is over, and this weekend the new season kicked off again. Before that though there were a few official matches, with Ronaldo (who else!) scoring twice to help Champions League winners Real Madrid to a European Super Cup win against Europa League champions Sevilla. As Spanish cup winners Madrid also participated in the two leg Spanish Super Cup, this time against league champions Atlético, but here they came out second best, and although flamboyant new signing James put them ahead in the Bernabeu, Raúl García levelled it late on, and Atleti’s own new signing Manzukic got the only goal in the return leg. European qualifiers as well in August, with Xabi Prieto scoring twice and Canales, Zurutuza and Bergara also on target as Real Sociedad got through a tricky early qualifier against Aberdeen. Last week saw the first legs of the play-off rounds, with Muniain giving Athletic Bilbao a 1-1 draw at Napoli in the Champions League play-offs, Prieto scoring again against Krasnodar in the Europa League, and Villarreal starting their participation with a 0-3 victory against Kazakhstan’s Astana, Cani, Giovani and Mario the scorers there.

So to the league, and it looks as if Messi may be back to his best (now the World Cup is over) after he scored two for Barcelona in a 3-0 victory over Elche. The other star in the Nou Camp though was 18 year-old Munir, who took advantage of the absence of Neymar and Luis Suárez to stake a claim for a place in the first team squad with his side’s second goal. Both Madrid teams played on Monday as the Super Cup second leg only took place on Friday night, Benzema and Ronaldo getting the goals as Real Madrid beat newly promoted Córdoba 2-0, but Atlético held to a 0-0 draw at Rayo Vallecano. Messi was in fact the only player to net twice this weekend, but there were some well known names amongst the other scorers, including Celta’s Nolito and Larrivey, Espanyol’s Sergio García, and Villarreal’s Uche. A special mention as well for Eibar’s Javi Lara, his impressive free kick from wide on left giving his team a 1-0 win over Basque neighbours Real Sociedad in their first ever game in the top flight. That one will go down in history! (26.08.14)
