An incredible week for Real Madrid, Ancelotti’s side scoring no less than thirteen goals in their two matches! First up was the Tuesday night Champions League tie, where Bale, Ronaldo, James and Benzema were amongst the scorers as they put five past Basel (the other was an own goal). And then on Saturday they hammered Deportivo 2-8, with a Ronaldo hat-trick, two each from Bale and Chicharito and another from James, the first time in their history that they have scored eight goals away from home in a league game! Crisis, what crisis?

Atlético were in action on Tuesday night as well, but despite strikes by Mandzukic and Griezmann they were beaten 3-2 by Michel’s Olympiacos. On Wednesday Barcelona struggled to beat APOEL Nicosia, Piqué getting the only goal in a 1-0 victory, and Athletic Bilbao were held to a 0-0 draw in the San Mamés stadium by old foxes Shakhtar Donetsk. Thursday saw La Liga’s two survivors open their Europa League campaign, Villarreal getting a valuable 1-1 draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach and defending champions Sevilla beating Feyenoord 2-0. Substitute Uche was the scorer for the Yellow Submarine just seconds after coming on (injuring himself in the play and having to go off immediately!), and Krychowiak and M’Bia got the goals for the Andalusians, both from almost identical Deulofeu free kicks.

So to the weekend, and after a slow start to the season, we had a record 42 goals scored this weekend! Of course the ten goals scored in Riazor helped (Ronaldo is well clear already in the Pichichi chart), but Real Madrid are still six points behind leaders Barcelona, who clocked up five at bottom club Levante, including one each for Neymar and Messi. Atlético dropped points as well, and Valencia and Sevilla are now in joint second place, Alcácer opening the scoring for the Ches in a 0-3 win at Getafe on Monday night, and Bacca netting twice, including a penalty, as the Andalusians won 1-3 at neighbours Córdoba. Villarreal are also in the European spots after they came from behind to beat Rayo Vallecano 4-2, Alberto Bueno scoring his fourth of the season for the visitors, but two from substitute Vietto seeing them off at the end.
