We are very used to Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi setting new records on a regular basis, but Ronaldo has just broken one which has stood for over 70 years after he scored twice at Levante to take his tally to fifteen in the eight weeks since the beginning of the season (seven in his case as he missed week two), the best ever start in the history of La Liga! Chicharito, James and Isco were also on target as the Merengues hit the Valencia based side for five, and they have now clocked up an incredible 25 goals in their last five league matches! Despite all that though they are still only third in the table…

Messi meanwhile is on track to become La Liga’s highest ever goalscorer, and depending on which newspaper you read he only needs one or two to equal Zarra’s all time 251 after scoring against Eibar. The official score-keepers in Spain are the Madrid based sports paper Marca, and contrary to every other source, they docked one from his total a couple of years ago which they attributed to an own goal. Zarra’s total itself is also questionable though, as some agencies say he has 252, but whatever the case Messi’s first chance to beat the record will be next Saturday, when Barça visit the Bernabeu stadium. With Ronaldo and his boys looking to be the first to get a goal past Bravo this season as well, that promises to be some game!

Neymar also scored in the victory over Eibar, and Barça stay top, two points ahead of Sevilla, who beat Elche 0-2 on Sunday with another strike from Bacca, plus one from Gameiro, who had only just returned after a long injury lay-off. Villarreal are up to sixth after a 2-0 win at Almería, Uche netting both the goals, and Celta drop to seventh after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao, Aduríz opening the scoring for the struggling Basque side from the penalty spot, and Nolito making it all square later on.
