Good results for the big three in the Champions League this week, although Athletic Bilbao lost 2-1 at Porto on Tuesday and their place in the knock-out stage is in jeopardy. Youngster Guillermo got the only goal, but it was not enough to prevent a defeat which leaves them at the bottom of their group. Barcelona though beat Ajax 3-1 with strikes from Neymar, Messi and Sandro, and on Wednesday both Madrid teams clocked up big wins, Atlético thrashing Malmö 5-0 with second half goals from Koke, Mandzukic, Griezmann, Godín and Cerci, and Real Madrid running out 0-3 victors against Liverpool in Anfield, Ronaldo getting the first and Benzema adding two more before the break to give the Merengues their first ever win against the Premier League side. It is now touch and go as to whether Ronaldo or Messi will be the first to beat Raúl’s all-time record of 71 in the competition, the former now on 70 and the latter 69. Meanwhile both Spanish sides top their respective Europa League groups following Thursday’s games, Villarreal beating Zurich 4-1 with strikes by Cani, Vietto, Bruno and Giovani, and Sevilla drawing 0-0 at Standard Liège earlier in the evening.

All eyes though were on Saturday’s “clásico” in the Bernabeu stadium, Real Madrid coming from behind to beat leaders Barcelona 3-1. Neymar put the Catalans ahead in only the fourth minute, but a Ronaldo penalty and goals after the interval by Pepe and Benzema gave the locals a win which takes them to within a point of their arch-rivals in the table. Ronaldo’s strike was his 16 th of the season in the league, extending his record even further. Only two points now separate the top five clubs, with Valencia beating Elche 3-1 on Saturday, Mandzukic getting the only goal as Atlético won 0-1 at Getafe on Sunday, and Sevilla coming from a goal down to win 2-1 against Villarreal, Vietto’s goal with ten minutes to go being overturned by a Denis Suárez strike and an injury time Bacca penalty. Celta are not that far behind them all however, Larrivey scoring twice in a 3-0 victory over Levante on Friday night which takes them up to sixth place. (28.10.14)
