He’s finally done it! Messi had been stuck on 250 league goals for the last three weeks, just one short of Zarra’s all-time Liga record of 251, but he finally flew past that with a hat-trick against Sevilla on Saturday evening! His last goal even spared the blushes of official “Pichichi” score-keeper Marca, the Madrid based paper stubbornly going against every other media source after docking the striker a goal a couple of years ago. For them he now has 252, for everybody else 253! Well done Leo, and he now has a chance to break another record on Tuesday when he tries to beat Raúl’s 71 goals in the Champions League. Hard to believe he’s only 27!

Messi though has to share the limelight with his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who himself broke a Liga record which has stood since “the beginning of time” after scoring twice at Eibar to take his tally to 20 in the first 12 games. At this rate he is well on his way to beating Messi’s best ever total of 50 for the season! Will we ever see a rivalry like it? For the record James and Benzema were also on target for Madrid in a 0-4 win, and Neymar scored again for Barça as they won 5-1 against the Andalusians.

Meanwhile Atlético clocked up a 3-1 victory against Málaga, Griezmann one of the scorers there, and once again the big three are starting to distance themselves from the rest. And elsewhere there were goals for Aduríz, Alberto Bueno, Gerard Moreno and Jonathas as the rest of the first division teams battle it out for the scraps. (28.11.14)
