Only minor targets left for the four Champions League sides in the last round of group games, but all achieved their respective objectives. Real Madrid made it six wins out of six and nineteen in a row in all club matches after beating Ludogorets 4-0, Ronaldo converting a penalty to pass Raúl’s 71 goals in the competition, and Bale, Arbeloa and Medrán adding three more after that. And Atlético and Barcelona both made sure of top spot in their respective groups, Simeone’s side drawing 0-0 at Juventus, and the Catalans beating Paris Saint Germain 3-1 with strikes by three little known chaps, Messi, Neymar and Luis Suárez! Messi’s of course was his 75 th in the Champions League, keeping him three clear of Ronaldo in the all-time rankings. Athletic Bilbao meanwhile ensured their place in the Europa League with a 2-0 victory over BATE Borisov, San José and Susaeta the scorers there. Villarreal and Sevilla will be joining the Basque side in the knock-out stage after they won their last group games on Thursday, although both had to settle for second place in their respective mini-leagues. Villarreal though won 0-2 at Apollon with second half strikes by Gerard Moreno and Vietto, and Sevilla beat Rijeka 1-0, Denis Suárez getting the only goal midway through the first half.

A low scoring round of games in the penultimate weekend of the year, with only 16 goals in all. Five of those though came on Friday, with Real Madrid beating Almería 1-4 prior to leaving to play in the Club World Cup. Inevitably two were from Ronaldo to take his tally for the season to date to 32, including 25 in the league from only 15 games, and Isco and Bale were also on target. Madrid’s game next weekend against Sevilla has been postponed to February due to their international commitment, but they are already sure to end the year in top spot after Barcelona were held to a 0-0 draw at Getafe, and Atlético were beaten 0-1 by Villarreal. Curiously the only goal was scored by Vietto, one of Simeone’s old prodigies from his time back at Racing Avellaneda, and the result signalled Atleti’s first home defeat in the league in over a year! Elsewhere Carlos Vela opened the scoring for Real Sociedad in the Basque derby against Athletic, albeit that De Marcos made it 1-1 in the end, and Stuani scored a late winner for Espanyol against Granada to take his side clear of the danger zone.
