Atlético Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann achieved a feat which neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Messi are ever likey to duplicate, scoring the last two official goals of the old year and the first two of the new! The French striker managed a hat-trick against Athletic Bilbao to close the 2014 programme, and he netted the first two in a 3-1 victory over Levante which opened the new calendar year after the two week festive break. Furthermore Atlético’s win takes them level with second placed Barcelona, who lost 1-0 at Real Sociedad, and just a point behind leaders Real Madrid, who were beaten 2-1 by Valencia. Ronaldo did at least convert a penalty (his tenth of the season) in that game to put his team in front, but strikes by defenders Barragán and Otamendi put an end to Madrid’s record 22 match winning run. Valencia stay fourth, still a point ahead of Sevilla, who beat Celta 1-0 thanks to a Pareja free kick, and now three points above Villarreal, who were held to a 2-2 draw by bottom club Elche. Vietto and Uche put the “Yellow Submarine” two up, but Jonathas was amongst the scorers as the hosts came back to save a point. (07.01.15)
