Real Madrid had more problems than expected defending their 0-2 lead against Schalke in Tuesday night’s Champions League game, although two from Cristiano Ronaldo and a third from Benzema took them through, despite a 3-4 defeat on the night. The other two Spanish teams play next week, but on Thursday it was the turn of the two sides who made it through to the last 16 of the Europa League, Villarreal and Sevilla having the bad fortune to be paired together. The Andalusians ran out 1-3 victors in the first leg though, with Vitolo, M’Bia and Gameiro giving the holders the edge despite a strike by the prolific Vietto.

At the end of 2014, Ronaldo had a ten goal lead over Messi in the race for the league “Pichichi”, but the Barcelona forward has just sailed past his arch rival after getting both goals (the first from the penalty spot) in his team’s 0-2 victory at Eibar on Saturday evening. Real Madrid stay a point behind Barça though coming in to next weekend’s “clásico” in the Nou Camp after beating Levante 2-0, Bale netting both goals in the first half, much to Ronaldo’s chagrin! Valencia meanwhile move above Atlético to third thanks to a 2-0 victory over Deportivo on Friday night, Dani Parejo converting a penalty and Paco Alcácer coming on to get the second a few minutes later. Atlético themselves were held to a 0-0 draw at Espanyol, and Sevilla are now closing up on them as well after a 3-0 win against Elche, Bacca getting the first two and Gameiro the third.

Alcácer’s return after an injury lay-off has come just in time for Spain’s next round of matches, but if Del Bosque decides not to risk him he has several choices. Aduríz has been on brilliant form recently, and he scored one from the penalty spot and set up the second for San José in Athletic’s 1-2 win at Celta, Larrivey getting the goal for the hosts. The veteran striker did limp off injured though, but another option is Rayo’s Alberto Bueno, who scored two in his team’s 3-1 win against Granada, taking his tally to seven in the last three games. Parejo may also be in line for a first call-up, as well as Sevilla’s Vitolo and Iborra, and Tello, Ander Herrera and several others have all been mooted by the local press. A squad of 23 will be announced on Friday. (17.03.15)
