Atlético Madrid and Barcelona join Real Madrid in the quarter finals of the Champions League after both won through their midweek ties. Mario Suárez was the scorer for Simeone’s side in a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, the match eventually being decided on a penalty shoot out, with Fernando Torres netting the last of the spot kicks. And Barça also won 1-0 against Manchester City the following day, Rakitic’s first half strike taking them through 3-1 on aggregate. Thursday saw the second leg of the fraticidal Europa League tie between Sevilla and Villarreal, the Andalusians going through to defend their title after a 2-1 win. Iborra added to the 1-3 scoreline from the first leg, and although Giovani levelled it on the night, Denis Suárez wrapped things up near the end.

The big match at the weekend though was of course the latest “clásico”, Barcelona running out 2-1 winners over Real Madrid on Sunday to open up a four point gap at the top of the table. Luis Suárez was the hero this time around, his second half strike giving Luis Enrique’s side the victory after Ronaldo had cancelled out Mathieu’s opener. Meanwhile Valencia consolidated third spot with a 0-4 win at Elche on Friday night, Paco Alcácer one of the scorers there. Atlético stay within a point of them though after they beat neighbours Getafe 2-0, and Sevilla are waiting in the wings in case either of them falter, Vitolo celebrating his international call-up with one of the goals in a 0-2 victory against the team they beat on Thursday, Villarreal.
