No goals in the fratricidal Champions League between the two Madrids on Tuesday evening, leaving everything to be decided in the Bernabeu stadium next week. Barcelona did take a big step towards a place in the semi-finals though after a 1-3 victory at Paris Saint Germain the following day, Neymar starting things off before Luis Suárez helped himself to two more. On Thursday Sevilla got the edge over Zenit in their Europa League quarter final, late goals by Bacca and the other Suárez (Denis) giving them a 2-1 win in the end.

Crisitano Ronaldo and Messi continue to set new records, and this weekend Ronaldo reached the 50 goal mark for the season after scoring the last goal in a 3-1 victory against Málaga on Saturday night, the fifth year in a row that he has achieved the feat. And earlier in the afternoon Messi clocked up his 400th goal in a Barcelona shirt (albeit that official record keepers Marca stubbornly insist in docking him one goal), his last minute strike adding to Luis Suárez’s first minute opener in a 2-0 win over Valencia. James also scored in Madrid’s match incidentally, the fourth of their players to reach the ten goal mark in the league, which in itself is something of a record.

Atlético Madrid are now four points clear of Valencia after they beat Deportivo 1-2, Griezmann netting both goals for Simeone’s side in the first twenty minutes or so. The French striker now has 20 for the season in “La Liga”, which in half the competitions in Europe would be enough to make him their top scorer. The Ches stay fourth for now after Sevilla could only draw, but there is quite a fight for the remaining Europa League spots, which could include the seventh placed team if Athletic Bilbao don’t beat Barcelona in the cup final. Athletic themselves closed in on Málaga with a 4-0 win over Getafe, Aduríz getting two in as many minutes around half time, and they move above Espanyol, who were held to a 2-2 draw at Levante on Friday night.

Caicedo scored one of Espanyol’s goals to take him level with team-mates Sergio García and Stuani, and Celta caught up with the Catalans after they beat Eibar 0-1, Nolito converting a penalty to give the Galicians the three points. Eibar are one of seven teams who are struggling to avoid the drop, although a first half strike from Jonathas in the Monday night match against Real Sociedad helped Elche move six points clear of the bottom three.
