Barcelona followed up their midweek 6-0 victory over Getafe with an even bigger 0-8 win at bottom club Córdoba on Saturday, Luis Suárez in particular helping himself to a first hat-trick in a Barça shirt. Messi got two as well, the second after Neymar let him run the ball into the net, and Messi returned the favour to his team-mate after Neymar won a penalty, allowing the Brazilian striker to score with the resulting spot-kick. Cristiano Ronaldo responded to Messi though by netting all three of Real Madrid’s goals in a vital 2-3 win at Sevilla later in the evening, taking him two ahead of his arch rival in the rankings, and keeping his team two points behind the Catalans in the table. Bacca got one back for the Andalusians from the penalty spot, but they are now three points behind Valencia in the race for the last Champions League place after the Ches won 3-1 against Eibar, Dani Parejo and Paco Alcácer on the scoresheet there. Elsewhere Nolito helped keep Celta’s hopes of reaching the European spots alive with the opener in a 2-2 draw at Almería, and Jonathas got a vital goal in a 1-2 win at Málaga which virtually ensures Elche another season in the top flight (financial situation permitting).
