Ronaldo and Messi continue to rewrite the record books in the Champions League, the Real Madrid striker converting a penalty against Juventus in Wednesday night’s semi-final to join his old rival on 77 goals in the competition. That was not enough however to prevent the Italians from knocking them out of the competition, and once again we have been deprived of seeing the best two footballers in the world face off in a European final. Messi didn’t score in Tuesday night’s match at Bayern Munich, but he and Luis Suárez he did have a hand in the two goals that Neymar netted to give the Catalans a 5-3 aggregate win against Pep Guardiola’s side. Meanwhile Sevilla progressed to their second Europa League final in a row and their fourth in ten years after beating Fiorentina 0-2, Bacca and Carriço getting the goals in the first half hour to put the game beyond the reach of the Italians.

So to the weekend, and Ronaldo has virtually tied up the Pichichi award again after helping himself to a hat-trick in a 1-4 victory at Espanyol on Sunday evening (Stuani got the goal back for the locals). That was all in vain though as Messi scored his team’s only goal in a 0-1 win at Atlético Madrid which tied up the league title for Barcelona exactly a year after Atlético were crowned champions in the Nou Camp. Elsewhere Gerard Moreno netted twice late on to give Villarreal (who had already ensured sixth spot) a 2-1 win over Málaga, and Jonathas got Elche off to a good start against Athletic Bilbao with a first half brace, albeit that the Basque side came back to overturn the scoreline after the restart. The result takes Athletic above Málaga to seventh, and they now have a second option to reach next season’s Europa League if they can’t beat Barcelona in the cup final. (19.05.15)
