Only one mid-week game this week, Barcelona’s first leg cup tie at second division B side Villanovense brought forward to free up time for them to play in the Club World Cup in December. However Luis Enrique left all his stars at home, and in the end the scoreboard didn’t move throughout the ninety minutes or so. The big names were back at the weekend though, and Luis Suárez and Neymar scored either side of half time in a 0-2 victory at Getafe on Saturday evening. That kept Barça level with Real Madrid, who beat Las Palmas 3-1 earlier in the afternoon, Ronaldo amongst the scorers to move level with Hugo Sánchez as La Liga’s third highest goalscorer ever, now only behind Zarra and Messi.

Third placed Atlético lost ground on the two leaders after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Deportivo, Lucas Pérez getting the equalizer for the Galicians late on after Tiago had opened the scoring for the visitors. That allowed Celta to leapfrog Simeone’s side after they won 2-3 at Real Sociedad, Iago Aspas twice cancelling out goals by Agirretxe before Pablo Hernández fired home the winner. Fifth placed Villarreal are now level on points with Atleti as well, Bakambu one of the scorers in a 2-1 victory over Sevilla, and Valencia are seventh after a 3-0 victory over city rivals Levante, Paco Alcácer opening the scoring from the penalty spot on the hour mark, and Feghouli and Bakkali adding two more later on. Athletic Bilbao move up to eighth after a 1-3 win at Betis, Williams getting a brace, and Rubén Castro pulling one back from the penalty spot before Raúl García wrapped things up near the end. And Espanyol stay in the top half of the table after a 1-1 draw against Granada, Caicedo saving a point for the Catalans with virtually the last kick of the match. (03.11.15)
