Goals galore in the midweek European games, Barcelona starting things off on Tuesday night hitting Roma for six, with two each for the returning Leo Messi, and for Luis Suárez. Real Madrid replied with four on Wednesday at Shakhtar Donetsk, Ronaldo getting two of those, and Atlético beat Galatasay 2-0 with a brace from Griezmann. All three are now sure of their place in the last sixteen. Valencia didn’t find the net at Zenit though and are struggling to qualify, and Sevilla are out of the Champions League altogether after a 4-2 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach, although a late Banega penalty gave them a favourable head-to-head goal difference against the German side, keeping alive their options of third place and a spot in the Europa League. On Thursday both Spanish sides tied up their places in the knock-out round of the Europa League, Athletic Bilbao coming from behind to beat Augsburg 2-3 with the opener from Susaeta and two late strikes by Aduríz, and Villarreal won 1-0 against Rapid Vienna, Bruno the scorer there.

Barcelona kept up their great form at the weekend with a 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday, Neymar scoring twice and Luis Suárez and Messi getting the other two. The famous “MSN trident” have now scored 30 of Barça’s 33 in the league, and have a total of 43 goals between them in all competitions, and that with Messi out for the last few weeks! Meanwhile Griezmann and Ronaldo scored again for their respective teams to keep them in second and third spots behind the leaders. However none of those superstars top our chart right now, that honour going to Athletic’s Aduríz, who belied his advancing years with another hat-trick at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday to take his tally for the season to twenty goals! Aduríz also moves into the lead for the “Zarra” award as the top scoring Spanish born player, ahead of Real Sociedad’s Agirretxe, as well as Lucas Pérez (Deportivo), Rubén Castro (Betis) and Nolito (Celta), all three of whom got on the scoresheet this weekend to help their respective sides to important victories.
