We are already in to the quarter finals of the cup, with four first leg games between Wednesday and Thursday. There was a repeat of last season’s final, defending champions Barcelona getting the edge over Athletic Bilbao with a 1-2 win in the San Mamés stadium. Munir got the opener for the Catalans, his fifth of the competition, and Neymar made it two before the break; however Aduríz got one back for the hosts late on to keep them in the tie. Celta and Atlético drew 0-0, and on Thursday Sevilla beat second division Mirandés 2-0 with goals from N’Zonzi and Vitolo. And Valencia and Las Palmas drew 1-1, Paco Alcácer saving the draw for Gary Neville’s side after Zahibo had headed into his own net.

It was another high scoring weekend, with 37 goals following on from last week’s record 41. Sporting’s Sanabria started us off with his second hat-trick of the season in a 5-1 win against Real Sociedad on Friday, and there were another seven goals in Sunday lunchtime’s Basque derby between Athletic and Eibar, Aduríz and Borja Bastón notching up a brace each as the new boys lost 5-2 to their bigger neighbours. Barcelona are the new leaders after they won 1-2 at Málaga, Messi getting the winner there, and both Madrid sides were held to draws, Atlético 0-0 (again) versus Sevilla, and Real Madrid 1-1 at Betis, Benzema at least saving a point for Zidane’s side. Elsewhere Lucas Pérez and Negredo were on target as Deportivo and Valencia drew 1-1, Caicedo put Espanyol on track for a 2-2 draw against Villarreal, Jozabed got his seventh of the season for Rayo in a 3-0 win over Celta, and Deyverson got one of Levante’s goals in a 3-2 victory over Las Palmas on Monday night. Long may it last! (26.01.16)
