For the first time in seven years someone other than Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Liga “Pichichi” award! Another hat-trick by Luis Suárez this weekend at Granada not only gave his team their second title in a row, but also took him on to 40 goals in the league, enough to win him a second European Golden Boot in to the bargain. No less than 14 of those goals came in the last five games, helping Barça turn things around after their blip in form last month. Ronaldo though did his best to catch the Uruguayan striker, scoring twice in the first half at Deportivo, but with no chance of catching Don Luis, Zidane decided to take him off at the break to rest him for the Champions League final. For the record, Atlético’s Diego Forlán was the last player other than the big two to win the award, with Messi and Ronaldo picking up three each since then.

The “Zarra” award for the top scoring Spanish player goes to Aduríz this season, the veteran striker scoring twice in a 3-1 win over a depleted Sevilla to take him on to 20 in the league and 36 in all competitions. The result tied up fifth spot for the Basque team, just ahead of Celta, who were beaten 2-0 by third placed Atlético Madrid thanks to second half strikes from Fernando Torres and Griezmann. Aduríz’s goals takes him one above Rubén Castro and two above Borja Bastón, both of whom scored from the penalty spot in their respective games. Castro’s goal incidentally condemned Getafe to the second division, and enabled Sporting to save themselves on the last day. Elsewhere Málaga’s Charles ended the season with a brace against Las Palmas (including a penalty) to help his team finish the current campaign in eighth spot. (17.05.16)

PS. Luis Suárez didn’t make it to 60 goals in the end, an untimely injury in this year’s Spanish cup final against Sevilla cutting short his participation. Jordi Alba and Neymar scored in extra time though to give the Blaugrana their 28th Copa del Rey title. Sevilla themselves had won the Europa League for the third time just a few days earlier, Unai Emery’s team coming from behind to beat Liverpool 3-1 with a goal from Gameiro and two from team captain Coke. And of course the season finished with that epic Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid which went down to the penalty shoot out. Carrasco equalized for Atleti after Sergio Ramos had given their opponents the lead, but Juanfran missed his penalty kick to give Zidane’s side their “undecimo” title.
