Luis Suárez started the new season the same way he finished the last, the Uruguayan striker helping himself to a hat-trick in a 6-2 win against Betis! Messi also netted twice after Arda Turan had opened the scoring, and Rubén Castro got both of the goals for the Andalusians. Barça already top the table, but Real Madrid are just behind them after a 0-3 victory at Real Sociedad. Cristiano Ronaldo was still out following the injury he picked up in the Euro 2016 final, but Bale found the net at the beginning and end of the match, and Marco Asensio got the third in-between. Luis Enrique’s side wasn’t the only one to win by a “set” though, Sevilla beating Espanyol 6-4 on Saturday, Vietto scoring twice and fellow new-signings Sarabia, Franco Vázquez, Ben Yedder and Kiyotake also on the scoresheet.

Sevilla of course played in both Supercups this summer, losing 3-2 to Real Madrid in the European version, and 5-0 on aggregate to Barcelona in the Spanish one. Vázquez cancelled out Asensio’s early goal in the former, but a Dani Carvajal strike won it for Madrid in the dying seconds of extra time. And goals by Luis Suárez and Munir in the first leg, and Turan (twice) and Messi in the second, gave the domestic title to the Catalans. The only other team in action before the opening day was Villarreal, and they have an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League proper after losing their first qualifying leg 1-2 against Monaco. One ray of light though was the goal scored by Alexandre Pato, who is hoping to reboot his career at the Madrigal stadium.

All in all though the league kicked off with an impressive 40 goals, a complete contrast to last season’s record low of 12. All three of the newly promoted teams picked up points, and Las Palmas start the season in fourth spot after coming from behind to beat Valencia 2-4. Santi Mina got both goals for the Ches, but new boy Livaja netted twice for the Canary Islanders, and we can’t finish without mentioning Kevin-Prince Boateng, the flamboyant new signing getting his name on the scoresheet as well with an elegant header.
