European competitions returned this week, with excellent results for all four Champions League sides. Barcelona hit Celtic for a massive seven goals on Tuesday, Messi scoring a hat-trick, Luis Suárez two and Neymar and Iniesta one each. Atlético won 0-1 at PSV Eindhoven, Saúl Ñíguez getting the only goal, and Sevilla held Italian champions Juventus to a 0-0 draw in Turin the following day. And Real Madrid came back from a goal down to beat Sporting Lisbon 2-1, a Cristiano Ronaldo free kick and a Morata header in the last five minutes or so turning the scoreline around. A bit of a mixed bag on Thursday though in the Europa League, Villarreal beating FC Zurich with goals from Alexandre Pato and Jonathan Dos Santos, but Athletic losing 3-0 at Sassuolo, and Celta drawing 1-1 at Standard Liège, Rossi the scorer for the Galicians.

Barcelona and Atlético notched up five each at the weekend prior to their midweek meeting in the league, the Catalans beating newcomers Leganés 1-5 on Saturday lunchtime. Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar all scored before the break, and Messi added a penalty after the restart. Atleti meanwhile won 5-0 against Sporting, with Griezmann getting two early on, Gameiro netting another in-between, and Fernando Torres coming on to help himself to a brace (including a penalty) near the end. Real Madrid stay top though after they beat Espanyol 0-2, Bale and Ronaldo absent but James and Benzema both finding the net.

Elsewhere Aduríz finally got his new campaign under way with two first half goals to overturn Valencia’s early lead, and Villarreal’s Sansone also scored two in the first half against Real Sociedad, the second from just over the half-way line! Home-grown Betis striker Alex Alegría (his name means “hapiness”!) also netted twice in a 2-2 draw against Granada, and there were goals as well for Pedro León (Eibar), Vietto (Sevilla) and Momo (Las Palmas), the latter from the penalty spot as the Canary Islanders won 1-0 against Málaga to go third.
