A good week for the seven Spanish sides playing in European competitions, all picking up positive results in their respective games. On Tuesday Real Madrid drew 2-2 at Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League tie, Ronaldo (with his 95th goal in Europe) and Varane the scorers for Zidane’s side, and Sevilla beat Olympique Lyon 1-0 thanks to a strike from Ben Yedder. And on Wednesday there were wins for Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, also against German opposition, the Catalans coming from a goal down to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-2 with second half goals from Arda Turan and Piqué, and Simeone’s team winning 1-0 against Bayern Munich, Carrasco firing home the only goal there. Victories on Thursday too for Celta and Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League, the Galicians beating Panathinaikos 2-0 with late strikes from Guidetti and Wass, and the Basques winning 1-0 against Rapid Vienna, Beñat getting the only goal after the restart. Villarreal meanwhile drew 1-1 at Steaua Bucharest, Santos Borré giving them an early lead before the Romanians equalized.

Atlético Madrid are the new leaders of the first division after a 0-2 victory at Valencia on Sunday, Griezmann (now the current “Pichichi” in the league) and Gameiro getting the goals in the second half. They go top on goal difference after Real Madrid were held to a fourth draw in a row, this time by Eibar. Bale made it 1-1 after Fran Rico’s opener, but the scoreline remained unmoved after that. Barcelona miss out on a chance to take over first place though after they lost 4-3 at Celta in the last game of the weekend. The locals were three up by the break, but two from Piqué and a Neymar penalty set up a nail-biting finish. Curiously both of Spain’s first choice central defenders, Piqué and Sergio Ramos, feature in our goalscorers’ chart this weekend! Elsewhere Aduríz was on target again for Athletic, although in the end they lost 2-1 at Málaga, and Ben Yedder got both Sevilla’s goals against Alavés, taking the Andalusians up to third in the table.
