This year’s winter break in the league programme was cut short by two rounds of cup matches, the second leg of the fourth round taking place before Christmas, and the first leg of the fifth round being played at the beginning of the new year. With the top ranked sides playing lower division opposition there were some big scores in the fourth round games, not least of which Sevilla’s 9-1 victory over Formentera, including hat-tricks by Vietto and Ben Yedder, and Barcelona’s 7-0 win over Hércules, Arda Turan scoring three of those in the absence of Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar. Elsewhere Raúl García scored for Athletic in a 3-0 victory over Racing Santander, and Sandro netted twice for Málaga, albeit that they were knocked out of the competition by second division Córdoba.

Tougher opposition of course in the fifth round, although Zidane still left Ronaldo, Benzema and the injured Bale out of the Real Madrid line-up to play Sevilla. In the end though they weren’t needed, James scoring twice in a 3-0 victory which virtually ensured their place in the quarter finals. Barcelona though will have an uphill battle in the Nou Camp after they lost 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao, Aduríz and Williams putting the Basque side two up before Messi got one back with a house-special free kick. Meanwhile Griezmann was on target as Atlético won 0-2 at Las Palmas, Willan José opened the scoring for Real Sociedad as they beat Villarreal 3-1, and Iago Aspas started things off for Celta from the penalty spot in a 1-4 win at Valencia.

Benzema and Ronaldo were back in the Real Madrid side for Saturday’s game against Granada though, and they got a goal apiece in the first half in a 5-0 win which takes them four points clear at the top with a game in hand. Sevilla are now second after they beat Real Sociedad 0-4, Ben Yedder helping himself to another hat-trick, but Barcelona faltered at Villarreal, Messi saving a 1-1 draw with another last minute free kick after Sansone had given the locals the lead. Griezmann scored his first league goal in ten matches as Atlético beat Eibar 0-2 to return to fourth spot, and Gerard Moreno, Iago Aspas and Rubén Castro were on target for Espanyol, Celta and Betis respectively in their games this weekend.
