The fifth round, second leg cup ties took place this week, with the big three all making it through to the quarter finals, On Tuesday night Atlético beat Las Palmas 4-3 on aggregate despite losing 2-3 on the night, Griezmann adding to his first leg strike with the opener in the Calderón stadium. The following day Barcelona overturned Athletic’s 2-1 first leg lead with a 3-1 victory in the Nou Camp, Luis Suárez, Neymar (from the penalty spot) and Messi all on target, and on Thursday Real Madrid completed the formalities after a 3-0 win against Sevilla from a week ago, Marco Asensio and Benzema amongst the scorers in a 3-3 draw in the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium.

Madrid visited Sevilla again on Sunday, but this time they were beaten 2-1, bringing to an end a record run of 40 games without defeat. Cristiano Ronaldo put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot midway through the second half, but a late own goal from Sergio Ramos and an injury time strike from Jovetic took the Andalusians to within a point of their opponents in the table (albeit with a game less).Barcelona kept up the pressure on the top two though with a 5-0 victory over Las Palmas the day before, Luis Suárez scoring twice and Messi getting one in between to share the Liga “Pichichi”spot on fourteen goals, two ahead of Ronaldo in the chart. Arda Turan was also on target in that match, and on Monday night Juanmi got his seventh of the season as Real Sociedad beat Málaga 0-2 to move up to fifth spot in the table. (17.01.17)
