Neither of Spain’s Champions League teams managed to score in this week’s second legs, but whereas Atlético’s 0-0 draw against Bayer Leverkusen was more than enough to take them through, Sevilla’s 2-0 defeat at Leicester left them out of the competition. Celta will be Sevilla’s heirs in the Europa League though after they won 0-2 at FC Krasnodar on Thursday, second half strikes from Hugo Mallo and Iago Aspas giving them a 4-1 win on aggregate.

La Liga’s other two Champions League teams Real Madrid and Barcelona rested this week, and they continue the fight for this year’s league title after both won at the weekend. Madrid were first up against Athletic on Saturday, and although Aduríz cancelled out Benzema’s opener, Casemiro got the winner soon afterwards. The following day Barça overcame an early scare to beat Valencia 4-2, a Luis Suárez strike and a Messi penalty overturning Mangala’s goal for the Ches, and although Munir levelled it again, Messi and André Gomes added two more after the restart. As luck would have it fourth placed Atlético and third placed Sevilla met on Sunday as well, Simeone’s side running out 3-1 winners to close the gap on the Andalusians to two points. Needless to say, Griezmann was one of the scorers there. Elsewhere Iago Aspas got the only goal to give Celta a 0-1 win at Deportivo in their local derby, and Rubén Castro got his first goal in a long time as Betis beat bottom club Osasuna 2-0. (20.03.17)
