A third round of league games in eight days as the sharp end of the season approaches, with the big Madrid derby taking place on Saturday afternoon. A headed goal by Pepe (possibly his last in a Real Madrid shirt?) appeared to have won it for Zidane’s side, but that man Griezmann popped up again to save a point for Atlético late on. That opened the door for second placed Barcelona, but it closed again with a bang after the Catalans lost 2-0 at Málaga later in the evening. To add to their woes it was one of their old rejects Sandro who got the opener, and the defeat leaves them three points behind Madrid having played a game more.

Atlético’s point keeps them one above fourth placed Sevilla, who bounced back from some recent poor results with a 4-2 victory over Deportivo, Sarabia and Ben Yedder amongst the scorers there. Villarreal beat Athletic 3-1 to return to fifth spot, and Real Sociedad are sixth after a 3-1 win against Sporting on Monday, Willian José and Juanmi starting things off in Anoeta. Before that though Eibar had slipped in to the top six after a 0-2 win at Celta, Pedro León on the scoresheet for the Basque side. Espanyol also kept up their push for a European spot with a 1-0 victory over Alavés, Piatti getting the only goal for the Catalans, and further down the table bottom club Osasuna are starting to rise from the dead, Sergio León scoring twice in a 2-1 victory over Leganés to give them their second win in four days.
