An epic Champions League quarter final on Tuesday between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Zidane’s side scoring three in extra time to make it 4-2 on the night, and 6-3 on aggregate. Marco Asensio made sure of the result late on, but before that Ronaldo notched up yet another hat-trick to add to the two he scored in the first leg, taking him on to 101 goals in the Champions League (including one in the qualifying round), and 103 in all European competitions (the other two came in the Super Cup). Once again though Real’s opponents in the semi-finals will be city rivals Atlético, who knocked out Leicester after drawing 1-1 in the return leg, Saúl Ñíguez heading the vital away goal to take them through. Barcelona though will have to watch the semis on the TV after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Juventus in the Nou Camp, the Catalans failing to score a single goal against the Calcio champions in 180 minutes of football. For the record Buffon is apparently the only world-renowned keeper who Messi has not been able to score against, another feather in the cap for the Italian international! Spain will also have one team in the Europa League semi-finals as well after Celta won through against Genk on Thursday, Pione Sisto the scorer in a 1-1 draw in Belgium. Their prize for reaching this stage of the competition for the first time in their history is a tie against the mighty Manchester United, although they may have preferred to meet Mourinho’s side in the final?

No rest though for the Real Madrid and Barcelona players as they went straight in to Sunday’s “clásico” in the Bernabeu stadium! This time though it was Messi’s turn to overshadow Ronaldo, the Argentinian forward scoring twice, the second with virtually the last kick-of the match, to give the Catalans a 2-3 victory. That took Barça top on goal difference, although Madrid still have a game in hand over their arch-rivals. Depending on who you believe, that was Messi’s 500 th goal for his club although, as often reported here, official record-keepers Marca insist he has one less. And talking of records, Atlético’s Griezmann has reached the 100 mark in the league after he got the only goal in a 0-1 victory over Espanyol on Saturday, the result keeping his team three points ahead of Sevilla in the fight for third spot. The French striker scored 40 goals for his first club Real Sociedad, and another 60 since moving to the Calderón stadium three seasons ago. Real themselves are in the running for a return to Europe this summer, and a Willian José header gave them a 1-0 win over Deportivo which took them momentarily up to sixth spot. However they ended the weekend a place lower after neighbours Athletic beat Eibar 0-1 on Monday, Raúl García getting the winner there in the fourth minute of injury time. Elsewhere Sandro was on target against Valencia to help Málaga secure another season in the top flight, and Boateng celebrated his contract renewal with the opener for Las Palmas in a 1-1 draw against Alavés.
