Atlético put up a good fight in their Champions League semi-final second leg against city rivals Real Madrid, but in the end an Isco away goal on the stroke of half time killed them off. Before that though a Saúl Ñíguez header and a Griezmann penalty had given Simeone’s side a real shot at overturning the three goal deficit from a week ago. Madrid go on to defend their title against Juventus at the start of next month. There will be no Spanish side in the final of the Europa League however after Celta were knocked out by Manchester United on Thursday, a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with a late header from Roncaglia leaving the Galicians just an away goal short of going through.

The penultimate round of league games this Sunday, Barcelona and Real Madrid both winning by the same 4-1 scoreline to take the title race down to the last weekend. Barça stay top on head-to-head goal difference after winning at Las Palmas, Neymar helping himself to a hat-trick and also setting up Luis Suárez for the other goal. Real Madrid though still have a game in hand, and they beat fourth placed Sevilla with a brace from Ronaldo to stay on track for their first league championship in five years, and their first domestic and European double in almost sixty! They visit Celta on Wednesday and then go to Málaga at the weekend needing four points to clinch the title.

Meanwhile all three teams vying for the Europa League spots drew, Aduríz putting Athletic Bilbao in front against Leganés, but Szymanowski saving a point for the visitors which keeps them in the top flight for another season. Aduríz won the “Zarra” award last year as the top scoring Spanish player, but he is currently lying second this season behind Iago Aspas, who converted a penalty on Sunday in a 3-1 defeat at Alavés.
