Cristiano Ronaldo has still not scored in the league this season (albeit that he was suspended for 4 games), but he was up to his old tricks again in the Champions League on Tuesday, scoring twice after Bale had volleyed home the opener to lead Real Madrid to their first ever win at Borussia Dortmund. Ronaldo now has four in this season’s competition, one behind Tottenham’s Harry Kane, who he faces next, and level with Sevilla’s Ben Yedder, who helped himself to a hat-trick, including a penalty in a comfortable 3-0 victory over Maribor. On Wednesday Barcelona scraped their second win in the league stage, but only thanks to an own goal by Sporting Lisbon’s Coates (“own goals” are Barça’s second top scorer this season, with four!). Atlético though fell to a last minute 1-2 defeat against Chelsea, Griezmann’s penalty being overturned by strikes from Morata and Batshuayi. Bad news as well for Spanish sides in Thursday’s Europa League ties, with Athletic losing 0-1 to the little known Zorya Luhansk, Villarreal drawing 0-0 at Maccabi Tel-Aviv, and Real Sociedad beaten 3-1 at Zenit, Diego Llorente’s third of the competition the only ray of light there.

The weekend games saw leaders Barcelona forced to play against Las Palmas behind closed doors due to safety concerns over the controversial Catalan referendum. That didn’t bother Messi though, and he netted a brace in a 3-0 victory to move light years ahead of the rest in this season’s Pichichi race. Elsewhere Sevilla are back up to second after a 2-0 victory over Málaga coupled with Atlético’s 0-0 draw at Leganés, and Valencia hold on to fourth spot after a 3-2 win against Athletic Bilbao, Zaza and Rodrigo amongst the scorers for the Ches, and substitutes Aduríz and Raúl García getting the goals for the visitors after the break. Isco scored twice against Espanyol to keep Real Madrid in fifth place, and Villarreal are back in the running after they beat Eibar 3-0, Bakambu completing a hat-trick with a late penalty there. It was a high scoring round of games again though, none more so than on Sunday lunchtime, when Real Sociedad and Betis drew 4-4. Sanabria, Joaquín and Sergio León all found the net for the visitors, with Willian José and Oyarzabal replying before that man Llorente struck again to save a point. Six goals as well on Friday in a 3-3 draw between Celta and Girona, Maxi Gómez getting his sixth of the season for the Galicians, and Stuani one of the scorers for the visitors. (03.10.17)
