The last round of Champions League matches this week, and Atlético have been knocked out despite a 1-1 draw at Chelsea. Saúl’s strike did give them a brief hope, but in the end they had to settle for a place in the Europa League. Sevilla are through though after they got the point they needed in a 1-1 draw at Maribor, Ganso their scorer, and Barcelona and Real Madrid both won their last games as well even though they were already sure of their spots in the knockout round, an Alcácer header and an own goal by old boy Mathieu giving the former a 2-0 win over Sporting Lisbon, and goals by Borja Mayoral, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lucas Vázquez ensuring a 3-2 victory for the latter over Borussia Dortmund. Incidentally Ronaldo’s goal set a new record, the first time that anyone had scored in all six group stage games.

On Thursday Athletic Bilbao secured their place in the knock-out stage of the Europa League with a 0-2 win at Zorya Luhansk, Aduríz and Raúl García getting the goals in the second half, and they join Real Sociedad, Villarreal and Atlético in next week’s draw. The first two both lost their ties against Zenit and Maccabi Tel-Aviv respectively, Willian José the only other La Liga player to score, but they had already qualified a fortnight ago.

Barcelona kept up their push at the top of the league table with a 0-2 win at Villarreal on Sunday, Luis Suárez and Messi scoring in the last twenty minutes, and they stay five points ahead of Valencia, who won 2-1 against Celta, Zaza starting things off for the Ches, and Parejo winning it with a hotly disputed penalty after Iago Aspas had made it all square. Another goal from Saúl in a 0-1 win at Betis kept Atlético in third place, but Real Madrid stay right behind them after thrashing fifth placed Sevilla 5-0, Ronaldo celebrating his fifth “Balon d’Or” with two of those, including a penalty. Madrid now fly to Abu Dhabi to take part in the Club World Cup. Elsewhere Athletic kept up their return to form with a 1-2 win at Levante, Aduríz getting the first from the penalty spot to help take his side away from the danger zone. (12.12.17)
