It’s getting harder and harder for Ronaldo and Messi to find new records to break, but Ronaldo set another one when he scored in both the semi-final and the final of this week’s Club World Cup. That took him on to seven for the competition (including one with Manchester United), two more than Messi, Luis Suárez and Monterrey’s César Delgado. Bale also came on after another injury lay-off to get the winner against Al Jazira, and Ronaldo’s free kick was enough to beat Gremio in the final and to take the trophy for the second year in a row.

Real Madrid’s game against Leganés was postponed at the weekend, and Barcelona took advantage to move eleven points clear of them in the league after a 4-0 victory over Deportivo on Sunday, Luis Suárez and Paulinho helping themselves to a brace each. Meanwhile a strike by Fernando Torres against Alavés took Atlético up to second. They climb above Valencia, who lost 2-1 at Eibar, a goal by Santi Mina not enough to prevent defeat for the Ches. Elsewhere Girona had a brief flirtation with the European spots, Stuani the scorer in a 1-0 win over Getafe, two goals by Espanyol’s Gerard Moreno appeared to have give the Catalans a victory at Las Palmas before late strikes by Rémy and Calleri pegged them back, and Betis beat neighbours Málaga 0-2 on Monday, Sergio León amongst the scorers to leave Michel’s team joint bottom with Las Palmas.
